What is burrata cheese?
Many people think that burrata cheese is like mozzarella. However, the two are very different!
Burrata cheese has a creamy filling with an outer mozzarella-type casing that holds in the cheese.
A more official definition from Burratahouse.com:
Burrata is an Italian cow’s milk cheese made from mozzarella and cream. The outer casing is solid cheese, while the inside contains stracciatella and clotted cream, giving it soft texture.
Burrata vs. Mozzarella
Since we already talked about burrata cheese above. Let’s compare it to it’s cousin, mozzarella cheese.
Mozzarella is creamy but doesn’t have a liquid-like center that burrata does, which is the biggest difference.
You can also find mozzarella cheese at the store in a shredded form. This form of mozzarella isn’t as creamy or soft as a fresh ball of mozzarella.
TIP: Either of these cheeses would actually work in this recipe, so if you only have mozzarella on hand, feel free to use that as well!

Frequently Asked Questions
You can use any sliced bread to make a grilled cheese. However, my favorite to use is a sourdough bread or multi-grain. Both add a delicious flavor and crisp up well in the pan.
You can do the water test! First, place the stainless steel pan over medium heat, then wait for one to two minutes. Next, add a tiny bit of water over the pan.
If the water bubbles and moves in the pan, it is ready. If it does nothing or just fizzles out, it is not hot enough.
Yes! You can use a vegan butter or non-stick spray. However, butter usually gives the best results for a crispy grilled cheese on both sides.
I use a stainless steel pan because it gives the crispiest results on the bread. However, any sauté pan you have available to you will work for this recipe.
Let it cool completely then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or in the freezer for 1 month.
When ready to eat, heat in the oven for about 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through. This will allow the bread to get nice and crispy again.
