Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

These are the ingredients you will need to make this recipe. However, the measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Reese’s Puff Cereal – You can use pretty much any cereal of the same size, swapping at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Mini Marshmallows – The larger marshmallows will work, however, I would then convert the measurement to ounces for accuracy.
  • Salted Butter – You can also use regular unsalted butter. However, I’d add a pinch of salt to the marshmallow mixture to balance the sweetness.
  • Peanut Butter – Any brand of peanut butter will work! Just make sure it’s smooth and creamy.
  • Chocolate Candy Melts – Regular chocolate works for melting, however, it may take longer to set.
  • Sea Salt Flakes – Optional, but highly recommended for balancing the sweetness and bringing out the rich, chocolate flavor.

Tips to Making the Perfect Krispie Treats Every Time

There are a few key tips and tricks to making sure you get an ideal krispie treat every time you make them.

  • First, make sure you are using fresh marshmallows! Stale ones will negatively impact the softness.
  • Melt the butter and marshmallows on low heat
  • Fold in the cereal off the heat so that the mixture remains soft
  • Let the treats fully set so that they are easy to slice and don’t fall apart
  • Add salt! It won’t make them taste salty, but actually perfectly balances out the sweetness and strengthens the chocolate flavor

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any cereal in this recipe?

Yes! However, make sure it has either chocolate or peanut butter flavor incorporated so that you still get a strong flavor of both.

Do I have to use mini marshmallows?

You don’t HAVE to, however, they are much easier for measuring and melting than the larger-sized marshmallows.

What is the Right Marshmallow-to-Cereal Ratio for Perfect Texture Every Time?

There should never be a 1:1 ratio between the marshmallow and cereal. It should always have a larger amount of marshmallow. This will ensure there is enough melted marshmallow to coat all cereal and have that gooey texture we all love.

How to Store Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats So They Stay Fresh?

Store at room temperature for up to 4 days in an airtight container. You can keep them all sealed in the same container or individually wrap them in plastic wrap.
