Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

These are the ingredients you will need to make this recipe. However, the measurements can be found when you scroll down to the recipe card below.

  • Salted Butter – You can also use unsalted butter, however, make sure to add a pinch of salt to balance out all the sweetness.
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Heavy Cream – Half & Half would also work for this recipe. However, if using Half & Half I would start with 1 tbsp and add more as needed until the desired frosting texture is achieved.
  • Vanilla Extract – You could also use vanilla paste if that is your preference or what you have on hand in your pantry.
  • Chocolate Creme Sandwich Cookies – Regular or Gluten-free Chocolate Vanilla Cream Cookies will work in this recipe.

Tips for a Perfect Oreo Frosting

The most important part about making an Oreo Buttercream Frosting is ensuring the sandwich cookies are crushed practically to a powder.

Not only does this help with even distributing, but makes piping the frosting possible. If there are too many big chunks, you won’t be able to frost a cake, cupcake or cookie easily from a piping bag.

Another important part of making this frosting is ensuring your butter is softened completely to room temperature. You don’t want to cream a cold butter! The heavy cream should also be at room temperature when adding to the frosting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oreo buttercream good for cake decorating?

This recipe is perfect for decorating a cake. I use it to frost my Cookies and Cream Cake. If you’re planning to pipe this frosting on a cake, ensure that the thickness of the frosting isn’t too thick and can be spreadable. You will also want to make sure the cookies are crushed finely before adding them into the frosting.

Can this recipe be made gluten-free?

Yes! You can easily swap out the regular cookies for the gluten-free chocolate sandwich cookies at a 1:1 ratio.

When crushing the cookies in the food processor, do I keep the creme filling in the cookies?

Yes! Add the cookies to the frosting with the creme filling. This helps to enhance that delicious and nostalgic Oreo Cookie flavor.

How can I store this frosting if I don’t want to use it the same day it’s made?

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2–3 weeks if sealed tightly. When ready to use, let soften to room temperature on the counter then re-mix it in the stand mixer or with an electric mixer before piping/adding to your desired dessert.
