Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
These are the ingredients you will need to make this recipe. However, the measurements can be found when you scroll down to the recipe card below.
- Salted Butter – You can also use unsalted butter, however, make sure to add a pinch of salt to balance out all the sweetness.
- Powdered Sugar
- Heavy Cream – Half & Half would also work for this recipe. However, if using Half & Half I would start with 1 tbsp and add more as needed until the desired frosting texture is achieved.
- Vanilla Extract – You could also use vanilla paste if that is your preference or what you have on hand in your pantry.
- Chocolate Creme Sandwich Cookies – Regular or Gluten-free Chocolate Vanilla Cream Cookies will work in this recipe.

Tips for a Perfect Oreo Frosting
The most important part about making an Oreo Buttercream Frosting is ensuring the sandwich cookies are crushed practically to a powder.
Not only does this help with even distributing, but makes piping the frosting possible. If there are too many big chunks, you won’t be able to frost a cake, cupcake or cookie easily from a piping bag.
Another important part of making this frosting is ensuring your butter is softened completely to room temperature. You don’t want to cream a cold butter! The heavy cream should also be at room temperature when adding to the frosting.
