Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
Here are some tips as well as ingredient notes to help make this recipe at home. Scroll down to the recipe card to see the full list of ingredients and their measurements.
- Cream Cheese – I use cream cheese from a block. I have not tested this recipe using cream cheese from a tub, lower fat or whipped cream cheese. Ensure it is a plain cheese and not flavored.
- Greek Yogurt – When making this recipe, I used a 0% Plain Greek Yogurt. However, you could also try a 2%, 5% or even a flavored greek yogurt.
- Honey – I love the flavor the honey adds to this dessert. It also keeps it on the more nutritious side for a dessert. You could swap out the honey for maple syrup or agave. I would not use granulated sugar as that may lead to a grainy texture.
- Cocoa Powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder is preferred. I typically use dutch processed cocoa powder for its high quality and rich taste.
- Chocolate Chips – Dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips are my preference. However, you can use any type of chocolate chip. Melting chocolate wafers would also work for this recipe. They set faster than regular chocolate and would last longer at room temperature.
- Coconut Oil – Any neutral baking oil would work for this recipe. The oil is melted with the chocolate to help create a nice shine. Keep in mind that if you’re using chocolate wafers you don’t need to add the oil.

Tips for Melting the Chocolate
If using chocolate chips, make sure you add the coconut oil or preferred oil to ensure a smooth and shiny melted chocolate. However, if you are using chocolate melting wafers, do not add the coconut oil (or any oil) as it is not necessary.
Most importantly, do not overheat the chocolate when melting. Start with 30 seconds then drop it down to 10 second increments. Stir frequently to melt final chocolate and to ensure that the chocolate doesn’t overheat or seize/become grainy clumps.
