As the weather gets warmer, smoothies start to sneak their way into my breakfast rotation.
I love a fruit smoothie, but sometimes my chocolate cravings get the best of me.
This Mint Chocolate Smoothie with Espresso is the perfect way to start my day. It’s fueling my body with the energy it needs plus an extra boost from the coffee in the protein powder I use.
However, if you’re not using the same protein powder, you can add a shot of espresso to the blender!

- Banana
- Cocoa Powder
- Chike Protein Coffee
- Chia Seeds
- Hemp Seeds
- Flax Seeds
- Cacao Nibs, for topping (optional)
What is the best protein powder to use in a smoothie?
You can use ANY protein powder in this recipe. I always recommend using what you have on hand, affordable or easily accessible.
In this specific recipe, I used Chike’s Mocha Mint Protein Coffee. That flavor is new, however, I found their Mocha Protein Coffee on Amazon.

How to Make a Mint Chocolate Smoothie
- Pour the almond milk and mint extract into the blender
- Add the frozen banana, protein powder and cocoa powder
- Top with the chia seeds, hemp seeds and flax seeds
- Blend until smooth and creamy. Scrape the sides and blend one more time
- Pour into a glass and top with cacao nibs (optional)
- Enjoy!

You can use either! I link some protein options above. You can also use a plain chocolate protein powder and the mint extract will add enough mint flavor to the smoothie.
Add a shot of espresso or 1-2 tbsp of coffee to the blender. It will add the perfect kick and flavor to the smoothie.
You don’t HAVE to, but I highly recommend it. This helps to create the perfect smoothie consistency and creamy texture.
You could use frozen avocado, frozen cauliflower or thick greek yogurt. However, I have found the best smoothie results using frozen banana.
The mint extract is best known to reduce stress and have a calming effect. This is perfect if you need to calm down before a busy day or wind down at the end of it!
I don’t recommend making this smoothie more than one day before consuming. It won’t stay as fresh.

Ingredients
- 3/4 cup almond milk, or milk of choice
- 1/8 tsp mint extract
- 1 banana, frozen
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 serving mint chocolate protein powder
- 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 tbsp hemp seeds
- 1/2 tbsp ground flax seeds

- Pour the almond milk and mint extract into the blender
- Add the frozen banana, protein powder and cocoa powder
- Top with the chia seeds, hemp seeds and flax seeds
