A Cinnamon Sugar Donut from my local donut shop was always my go-to order growing up. There is nothing I love more than a cake donut!

These donuts come out light, soft and fluffy. The cinnamon flavor pairs perfectly with the vanilla extract.

The two best parts about this recipe is that they are easy to make and healthier than your typical donut. You can use a natural sugar such as date sugar to make these donuts.

You will need a few simple ingredients, a donut pan and a craving for donuts!

Main Ingredients

Ingredients measured out in bowls to make Cinnamon Sugar donuts.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Flour: If you prefer or need to for dietary restrictions, you can also use Gluten Free All Purpose Flour in this recipe at a 1:1 ratio
  • Sugar: I have made this donuts with both regular granulated sugar and all natural date sugar. Both come out delicious and can be swapped out at a 1:1 ratio
  • Butter: Substitute with coconut oil or a vegan butter at a 1:1 ratio
  • Egg: You can substitute an egg with a flax egg. 1 egg = 1 tbsp ground flax seed + 1 tbsp water (Mix and let sit for about 10 minutes, then add to the batter when called for)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these donuts gluten free?

Not if you use Regular All Purpose Flour. However, if you swap the flour for Gluten Free Regular All Purpose Flour, then they are gluten free friendly.

What makes these donuts healthier than a typical donut?

These donuts are baking and can be made with an all natural sugar such as date sugar or coconut sugar.

How do I know the donuts are done baking?

The donuts will have puffed up and if you want to make sure, you can stick a toothpick in the donut. If it comes out clean, they are done baking.

Do I have to add the cinnamon sugar coating?

Nope! You can omit completely, if desired. I would add the sugar coating when ready to eat the donuts not ahead of time so that they stay fresh.

How do I store leftover donuts?

Once completely cooled, store in the donuts in a Ziplock or airtight container for 1-2 days at room temperature. Store in the freezer for up to 2 months in a freezer-safe container.

NOTE: If possible, coat the donuts in cinnamon sugar when ready to eat and not before storing.
