Easy Whipped Chocolate Frosting Recipe
This Whipped Chocolate Frosting is perfect on top of either chocolate or vanilla cakes. It’s rich, decadent and absolutely delicious, while also being easy to make.
We all need a staple frosting recipe in our lives and this one is mine.
This frosting is for the chocolate lover who doesn’t think a dessert can be TOO chocolatey.
The texture is absolute perfection, being creamy and soft. And the flavor is incredibly rich and decadent. It will pair perfectly with both vanilla and chocolate cakes.
Or really any flavor of cake that goes well with chocolate. Strawberry, peanut butter, cookies and cream, funfetti…shall I go one?
With just a few ingredients, you will be able to make this frosting in no time!

How to Make a Whipped Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
- In a large mixing bowl, add the cocoa powder. whisk to remove any large clumps
- Add in the softened butter and whisk until fully combined (you can also use a hand mixer on the lowest speed)
- Measure 1 cup of the powdered sugar and add it to the bowl and give it a brief mix
- Add the remaining powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract
- Mix until fully combined
- If the mixture is too thick, continue to add 1/2 tbsp of milk until it reaches your desired consistency
- Enjoy with a spoon or add on top of cake or cupcakes. These Gluten Free Chocolate Cupcakes are my favorite!

Yes! Powdered sugar is key when making a light and fluffy buttercream frosting.
Yes! You can add mint/peppermint, orange or anything else you desire. You will have to test these as you go since I have not tested the additions of these flavorings.
TIP: You can also add more but never take out, start by adding very small amounts of extracts if you choose to play with flavors.
This buttercream goes amazing on my Gluten Free Chocolate Cupcakes and Small Batch Chocolate Cake.
The buttercream should be thick enough to hold up on it’s own. Use a whisk to lift up the frosting and hold it in the air. None should drop off of it easily!
You also want to make sure there are no clumps of butter, sugar or cocoa powder.
You can make more cake or cupcakes! Store the frosting in the fridge for up to 7 days for ultimate freshness.
