Sweet and Salty Chex Mix in a bowl.

When you reach for a snack, do you choose a sweet or savory snack?

For me, I usually like a combination of both!

This Sweet Chex Mix recipe is the perfect combination of salty and sweet.

The pretzels and chex mix cereal add a great crunch and savory flavor.

However, the honey roasted peanuts, raisins and dark chocolate chips bring it all together with the perfect amount of sweetness.

With the perfect harmony of flavors and textures, this recipe is the ultimate snack!

Main Ingredients

Ingredients measured out in bowls to make homemade Chex mix.

Health Benefits in this Homemade Trail Mix

  • Rice Chex: This cereal is a great option if you have to make this recipe gluten-free friendly.
  • Grain-Free Pretzels: Making this recipe allergen friendly. I used Savor by Suzie’s Grain Free Pretzels which are made with Cassava Flour! Cassava Flour is a root vegetable related to sweet potato. A great option to add more substance to this trail mix. However, you can use any pretzel or gluten free friendly pretzel that you have on hand or at your local store!
  • Peanuts: Contains healthy fats and a little bit of protein along with minerals and antioxidants.
  • Honey: Honey is a natural sweetener that is a healthier alternative to processed sugar. It contains numerous antioxidants and is known to be anti-inflammatory.
  • Dark Chocolate: Contains antioxidants and is considered a “superfood”. It has fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc.
  • Raisins: Aid in digestion and may support stomach issues. Raisins also provide our bodies with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Roasting the Peanuts in Honey

Why make Honey Roasted Peanuts when you can buy it at the store?

There are two main reasons as to why I prefer to make homemade honey roasted peanuts vs. buying the container from the store.

First, I know all the ingredients and the process that went into making the peanuts. There are no added oils, sugars (besides honey) or other processed ingredients.

Secondly, and most importantly, it’s delicious!

The honey makes its way onto the other ingredients, creating an incredible flavor in each handful.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Peanuts – You can use any nut! I have also made this recipe with almonds and it comes out well.
  • Honey – The best swap for honey is to use maple syrup. It doesn’t change the flavor too much and is the same consistency.
  • Rice Chex Cereal – You can use any version of Chex cereal for this recipe as it adds a nice crunch!
  • Pretzels – I use gluten free pretzels in this recipe, however, you can use regular pretzels as well.
  • Raisins – Raisins are a classic choice but you can use other dried fruits as well to get that chewy factor.
  • Chocolate Chips – I used dark chocolate chips, however, any type of chocolate chip will work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Corn Chex Cereal instead of Rice?

Yes! Swap at a 1:1 ratio. It may change the flavor but will still be delicious!

How long do the peanuts have to cool?

I let them cool for about 1 hour. However, waiting longer will leave you with a less sticky texture. I like how the stickiness of the honey gets all in the rice Chex cereal.

Can I use store-bought Honey Roasted Peanuts?

Of course! However, making them yourself uses less processed ingredients. In addition, the excess honey adds a great flavor to the other ingredients.

Is it cheaper to make homemade or buy Chex Mix at the store?

It is much cheaper to make it at home. You can get a lot more for your money by making it yourself. And I may be biased, but I think it is even more delicious than the store bought version.

What is the best way to store this Sweet Chex Mix?

Store in a Ziplock bag for up to 3 days or 5 days in a sealed airtight container at room temperature.
